Make Work Zone Safety Part of Your Labour Day Long Weekend Plans

Today, Highways Minister Kim Gartner reminded all motorists to make work zone safety a key part of their Labour Day long weekend plans.

"Wherever your travels take you this September long weekend, please remember the women and men working hard to improve our road network," Gartner said. "Work zone safety means obeying all construction signage, flag persons and checking the Highway Hotline so that everyone can get home safely."

Some highlights of ongoing and upcoming provincial highway projects include:

Highway 955 Clearwater Bridge north of La Loche - An estimated $7.3 million project that began on site work this spring to replace the existing two-lane bridge as it's nearing the end of its service life is expected to be completed by the end of the year. A temporary, one-lane bridge is in place to accommodate traffic.

Highway 33 near Sedley - An estimated $820,000 project began in late August to install eight culverts by a process known as boring (trenchless culvert installation). The project is expected to be completed this fall.

Highway 49 west of Pelly - An estimated $1 million project begins this month to install two culverts by open excavation. Work is expected to be completed this fall.

Highway 23 Shand Creek Bridge near Weekes - About $100,000 will fund bridge repairs expected to start mid to late September with work expected to be completed before the end of the year. Traffic will be reduced to one lane when work begins.

On site project start and completion times are always subject to weather.

Motorists are encouraged to check the Highway Hotline for the latest available information about ongoing provincial road construction to plan their routes.

The Highway Hotline, Saskatchewan's provincial road information system, also provides information about closures related to fires, flooding or other incidents, along with the status of ferries.

With this year's budget, the Government of Saskatchewan has invested more than $14.6 billion in transportation infrastructure since 2008, improving more than 22,700 kilometres of highways across the province.
