Provincial staff ready to support emergency reception operations

CANADA, August 14 - More than 30 provincial civil servants have received enhanced training to help operate reception centres during extreme weather and other emergencies, strengthening support for Islanders when they need it.

The training included reception centre operations, emergency management and psychological first aid.  It is hurricane season now and although no storms are in the immediate forecast, residents are encouraged to stay prepared throughout the season. 

“Communities, municipalities and volunteer groups do a great job at opening their doors and providing support in an emergency,” said Justice and Public Safety Minister Bloyce Thompson. “These trained provincial employees will be available to help communities when they need it most.”

There are 62 certified reception centers in the province, along with nine provincial emergency sites. During emergencies, provincial sites can be used to run provincial programs and may also serve as reception centres or shelters.  All sites are equipped with generators to provide backup power.

“It’s easier to get prepared when the weather is good, rather than when we are facing power outages or other obstacles,” said Emergency Measures Organization Manager Alan Murphy. “Take some time now to locate the nearest reception centre and fuel station with generators. It’s also a great time to make a plan with any family or friends who may need some extra help in an emergency.”

All emergency reception centre sites are listed on the province’s Reception Centre Map.

Many Island gas stations now have generators so they can stay open and provide fuel in the event of a power outage. These locations are noted on the Fuel Station Resiliency Sites With Generators
