Canada’s PM Condemns Treatment of Gaza Flotilla Activists
(MENAFN) Canada has urged Israel to ensure the protection of its citizens following the interception of a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla, after the country’s prime minister strongly criticized what he described as “abominable” treatment of activists involved in the mission.
Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned Israel’s handling of the detained participants, saying authorities must guarantee the “safety and security” of Canadians involved in the convoy. His remarks were shared on social media, where he responded to footage circulating online showing activists after their detention.
Carney stated: "The abominable treatment of civilians aboard the flotilla, including that which is documented in footage shared by (Israeli National Security Minister) Itamar Ben-Gvir, is unacceptable."
He also confirmed that Canada’s foreign ministry had formally summoned Israel’s ambassador in Ottawa, seeking clarification and pressing for guarantees: "assurances regarding the safety and security of Canadians involved."
The prime minister further highlighted that Ottawa has already taken punitive measures against Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, including financial restrictions and travel limitations, due to what he described as repeated incitement. He said: "Canada has already imposed strict sanctions on Mr. Ben-Gvir, including asset freezes and a travel ban, in response to his repeated incitement of violence."
Reaffirming Canada’s broader position on civilian protection, he added: "The protection of civilians and respect for human dignity must be upheld everywhere, at all times."
The statement followed the release of a video attributed to Ben-Gvir showing detained activists with their hands bound and forced to kneel after being intercepted by Israeli forces while reportedly in international waters.
Separately, organizers of the Global Sumud humanitarian aid flotilla said on Tuesday that all 50 vessels in the convoy had been seized by Israeli authorities.
