Canada Denounces Iran's Missile, Drone Strikes on UAE

(MENAFN) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday issued a forceful condemnation of Iran's renewed assault on the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as a major fire engulfed a key Emirati energy facility following a drone strike.

"Canada strongly condemns Iran's unprovoked missile and drone attacks on the United Arab Emirates," Carney wrote in a post on X.

Voicing solidarity with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the Emirati public, Carney praised "defensive efforts to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure," before reiterating his government's position: "Canada reiterates its call for de-escalation and diplomacy in the region."

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand echoed the condemnation on X, declaring: "Strikes on civilian infrastructure must end – in line with international law." She further affirmed that "Canada stands with the people of the UAE, alongside other Gulf partners and will continue to support diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation."

Earlier Monday, a significant blaze erupted at the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone — a strategically vital energy hub on the UAE's eastern coastline — after it was struck by an Iran-launched drone, according to the Fujairah Media Office. Three Indian nationals sustained moderate injuries in the attack and were hospitalized for treatment.

The strikes represent the latest escalation in a regional crisis sparked when the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran on Feb. 28, prompting Tehran to retaliate against Israel and American Gulf allies while shutting down the Strait of Hormuz. A Pakistani-brokered ceasefire took effect April 8, but negotiations in Islamabad ended without a lasting agreement. US President Donald Trump subsequently extended the truce with no fixed deadline.

Since April 13, Washington has maintained a naval blockade restricting Iranian maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
