Canadian PM Arrives in Australia to Boost Trade, Defense Ties
Carney lands in Sydney on Tuesday and is scheduled to travel to Canberra on Thursday, where he will address the Australian Parliament and meet with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Both countries are members of the Commonwealth and the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, alongside the US, UK, and New Zealand.
“This is a very important relationship for Canada to continue to build on. It is one that’s predicated on years of cooperation,” said Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty, who accompanies Carney in Sydney. McGuinty emphasized that Canada is seeking a “deeper” economic and defense partnership with Australia.
The visit follows last year’s agreement for Canada to purchase an over-the-horizon radar system from Australia for Arctic use. Carney also aims to advance efforts for the European Union to engage with a large Pacific Rim trade bloc that includes Australia, reinforcing both trade and strategic ties.
