Canada’s Carney in Australia to Deepen Trade, Defense, Intel Ties
Following his arrival in Sydney, Carney is scheduled to travel to the capital Canberra on Thursday, where he will address Parliament and hold bilateral talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.
The two nations share deep institutional ties — both are Commonwealth members and anchor partners within the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, alongside the US, UK, and New Zealand.
Defense Minister David McGuinty, accompanying Carney in Sydney, underscored the significance of the visit. "This is a very important relationship for Canada to continue to build on. It is one that's predicated on years of cooperation," McGuinty told media.
McGuinty added that Ottawa is pursuing a "deeper" economic connection and defense and security partnership with Canberra.
The visit builds on existing momentum — last year, the two governments inked a deal for Canada to acquire an over-the-horizon radar system from Australia, intended for Arctic deployment. Australia also featured prominently in Canada's defense strengthening strategy unveiled last month.
Beyond bilateral matters, Carney is spearheading efforts to bring the European Union into a partnership framework with the Pacific Rim trade bloc, of which Australia is a member.
The trip extends further east Thursday, with Tokyo as the next destination. The multi-leg Asia-Pacific tour previously included a stop in India, where Carney signed trade agreements and moved to reset diplomatic relations with New Delhi.
Canada and Australia have maintained formal diplomatic relations since 1939. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached $6.1 billion in 2024, with Canada's direct investment in Australia that same year totaling a substantial $58.8 billion.
