Canada refuses to pay USD1B to partake in Gaza’s “Board of Peace”

(MENAFN) Canada has decided not to pay US$1 billion to participate in the United States’ “Board of Peace,” its finance minister announced.

Francois-Philippe Champagne explained that while the board’s framework is still under development, Canada has halted plans to pay the proposed fee. "There [are] a lot of details to be worked out, but one thing, which is clear, is that Canada is not going to pay if we were to join the Board of Peace," he said during a press briefing in Davos, Switzerland, where he is attending the World Economic Forum.

The announcement reverses a previous step by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who had initially accepted a draft invitation to join the board on Monday. Champagne noted that Canada could still participate if the fee requirement is removed. “We're still early days [into] that what's going to be the terms of reference of that board, how it's going to operate," he said.

"The prime minister will have to make the final decision when all the facts are known and all the details have been hammered out — whether this is in the best interest of Canada," Champagne added.

Carney highlighted the importance of funding for humanitarian aid in Gaza, stating, "Canada wants money to have maximum impact. We still do not have unimpeded humanitarian aid flows at scale to the people of Gaza."

US President Donald Trump invited 60 world leaders to join the board. Some officials have expressed concern that the Board of Peace could extend its role to broader global conflicts and might potentially challenge the UN’s authority.
