Canada Participation in U.S.-Led “Board of Peace” on Hold

(MENAFN) Canada’s participation in the U.S.-led “Board of Peace” is on hold after its finance minister confirmed the country will not pay a proposed US$1 billion entry fee.

Francois-Philippe Champagne told reporters in Davos, Switzerland, where he is attending the World Economic Forum, that the framework for the board remains incomplete but Canada has decided to halt the payment.

"There [are] a lot of details to be worked out, but one thing, which is clear, is that Canada is not going to pay if we were to join the Board of Peace," Champagne said.

The announcement comes after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney initially accepted a draft invitation to the board on Monday. Canada could still join the Trump administration initiative if the fee is removed.

“We're still early days [into] that what's going to be the terms of reference of that board, how it's going to operate," Champagne told media.

"The prime minister will have to make the final decision when all the facts are known and all the details have been hammered out — whether this is in the best interest of Canada."

Carney emphasized the need for funding in the Gaza Strip, highlighting ongoing humanitarian challenges.

"Canada wants money to have maximum impact," Carney said. "We still do not have unimpeded humanitarian aid flows at scale to the people of Gaza."

The board, which US President Donald Trump has invited 60 world leaders to join, faces skepticism from some quarters. Critics warn it could extend its mandate to global conflicts and potentially rival the United Nations.
